November 8th, 2018 — Start of the Day

Start of the Day


It’s 7 a.m. and the kettle is on the woodstove and I have a few minutes while the water finishes heating enough for a nice cup of tea.


I’ve done my yoga, swept the ashes into the ash pan, built a new fire, dressed, hauled the ash pan out to Kimball to spread some bio-char and potash.


Yesterday’s laundry is folded and put away.  Kyle’s shirt has been hand washed. A load of dark clothes is in the washer.


I’ve fried bacon and made pancakes from scratch.  Emptied the dishwasher and reloaded the dirties we’ve already made.


I debated what to do next.  Finish the baby surprise sweater?  No, the yarn is dark and I like daylight to knit that color.  Read Hemp Bound? I need to finish it so I can start Charles Walters’ Eco-Farm and the series of mysteries I picked up at the library book sale.  Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler are waiting for me to find a quiet afternoon to spend with them. Earn more Swagbucks? Finding a survey can sometimes be difficult.  They very often have plenty of middle-aged, rural living white women to give opinions.


I still have chores, the cows have started eating hay and it now takes 2 people to feed.  One to drive the truck with hay and one to open the gates and make sure no cows escape to rampage across the countryside, leaving carnage in their wake and terrifying villagers.  It’s not quite that dramatic but it can seem like it when they all run at you like everything they’ve ever wanted is on the other side of that gate and all they need to do is get past you to get it.


So I decided on reading e-mail and writing a blog post.  Maybe not my most productive moments but probably the best.  When I stir myself again I’ll mix up a batch of granola to start tomorrow’s day.




4 cups oats, I like quick cooking and organic

1 cup wheat germ or oat bran

1 cup nuts, I use sliced almonds

¼  cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons cinnamon

⅓ cup oil, I use olive

⅓ cup honey

⅓ cup water

Mix in 13×9 cake pan and bake at 300 degrees for 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

Let cool and store in tightly covered container.  You can add dried fruit now or when you pour a bowl.  I wait until I eat the granola so I can add fresh fruit if we have it or dried cherries, cranberries, raisins; whatever we have on hand.
