Fall Fest 2019

Phew!  We’re done. Saturday we had glorious fall weather that made all our hard work preparing for Fall Fest worth it.  All the rain we had just shined up Mortitia and Wednesday for their Selfie With a Sheep gig. The pumpkins stacked on the hay wagon looked sincere and the pigs added background color.  And grunts. Maria from Maple Bee Farms, where the syrup is so sweet even the bees are jealous had a beautiful display of syrup, honey and fruit snacks, we hope she comes back every year.

Now that Fall Fest is behind us it’s back to our usual list of chores.  The cows will be moved back to Kimball from the old hay field. There’s one last fence in the old hay field that we’re replacing and the old barbed wire and fence posts need to come out.  And we want to put the wooden corner posts in the front half of Kimball so next spring when we add the fencing we won’t have to wait until things dry up enough to dig post holes to get started.  

Maple Bee Farms

After fencing the winter work of fire wood will get going.  We’ll start with any tree that has fallen on the fence since last year.  There’s 3 or 4 of those, then we move onto trees that have fallen but aren’t in anyone’s way.  Nine years here and we still have dead ash trees to cut up. But it saves us having to cut any trees down and yelling TIMBER!

I’m still hoping to get some trees planted this fall, I’m keeping my eye out for bargains I can grab.  In the meantime I have 7 mums waiting for me and a shovel.

Here’s the recipe to the Spice Cake we served!

Spice Cake

½ cup whole yoghurt

½ cup butter, softened

¼ teaspoon salt

1 ½ cups flour

2 eggs

¼ cup water

1 cup Rapadura- we subbed maple syrup

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ginger

½ teaspoon nutmeg

⅛ teaspoon cloves

¼ teaspoon white pepper

2 teaspoons baking soda

Blend yoghurt, butter, flour, salt and water. Beat in Rapadura, vanilla, spices and baking soda until dough is very smooth. 

Line 2 8” round cake pans with parchment paper. Butter the parchment paper and dust with flour. 

Divide dough between pans and level. 

Bake 300 degrees for one hour.
